Multiple sclerosis has a large impact on the daily life of a patient, whether it is physically or mentally. One of the most common physical impacts MS has are challenges with mobility in the body. Numbness, weakness and balance are some examples of how MS can impact someone physically. These challenges may lead to problems with walking and staying focused. Fatigue is also a very common symptom for those who have been affected by MS, fatigue impacts energy levels which may not allow one to be as active as others.
A way to combat fatigue is to pace oneself, not rush, and take breaks when doing a physical activity that may wear them out. Multiple sclerosis can also impact the vision of those who are affected. Visual disturbances such as blurred vision or double vision can be very serious as it may lead to difficulties in reading, driving and other visual tasks. Using adaptive vision technologies as soon as possible is the best way to combat blurred or double vision as a result of multiple sclerosis. Muscle spasms, stiffness, and chronic pain can also occur, which can impact the mobility and physical comfort of a patient. The best way to fix these problems is to get proper medications or physical therapy.
One of the biggest mental effects that can result from MS is cognitive impairment. Cognitive impairment can include symptoms such as problems with recalling memory, focusing on simple activities, socializing with others, and concentrating while working on a task that involves a lot of thinking. Being organized makes it easier for one with MS to stay more focused, for example, creating calendars or a list of tasks to complete may help. Living with multiple sclerosis can lead to symptoms such as depression, anxiety and stress as patients are not able to participate in the same rigorous activities as others.
To deal with this, the patient could join support groups or get counseling to help deal with any psychological issues the patient may be dealing with. Social relationships can also be impacted by MS as patients are experiencing changes in physical abilities and energy levels. Maintaining open communication with friends and family is crucial to maintaining a good relationship with loved ones.
